Between Oakland and downtown Berkeley you can catch a Fremont-Richmond train.
For AC Transit bus connections, take a transfer from the white AC Transit machines in
the BART station to save 25ยข off the bus fare.
BUS
Regional company AC Transit ( 511, 510-817-1717; www.actransit.org ; day pass $5) runs con-
venient buses from San Francisco's Transbay Temporary Terminal at Howard and Main
Streets to downtown Oakland and Berkeley, and between the two East Bay cities. Scores
of buses go to Oakland from San Francisco during commute hours ($4.20), but only the
'O' line runs both ways all day and on weekends; you can catch the 'O' line at the corner
of 5th and Washington Sts in downtown Oakland.
After BART trains stop, late-night transportation between San Francisco and Oakland is
with the 800 line, which runs hourly from downtown Market St and the Transbay Tempor-
ary Terminal in San Francisco to the corner of 14th St and Broadway.
Between Berkeley and downtown Oakland ($2.10) on weekdays, take the fast and fre-
quent 1R bus along Telegraph Ave between the two city centers. Alternatively, take bus 18
that runs via Martin Luther King Jr Way daily.
Greyhound ( GOOGLE MAP ; 510-832-4730; www.greyhound.com ; 2103 San Pablo Ave) op-
erates direct buses from Oakland to Vallejo, San Jose, Santa Rosa and Sacramento. The
station is pretty seedy. Discount carrier Megabus ( GOOGLE MAP ; across from the south en-
trance to W Oakland BART station) has daily service to Los Angeles (seven hours), departing
from opposite the south entrance to W Oakland BART station.
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
From San Francisco by car, cross the Bay Bridge and enter Oakland via one of two ways:
I-580, which leads to I-980 and drops you near the City Center; or I-880, which curves
through West Oakland and lets you off near the south end of Broadway. I-880 then contin-
ues to the Coliseum, the Oakland International Airport and, eventually, San Jose.
Driving to San Francisco, the bridge toll is $4 to $6, depending on the time and day of
the week.
