In-Depth Information
FERRY
With splendid bay views, ferries are the most enjoyable way of traveling between San
Francisco and Oakland, though also the slowest and most expensive. From San Francisco's
Ferry Building, the Alameda-Oakland ferry ( 510-522-3300;
www.sanfranciscobayferry.com ) sails to Jack London Sq (one-way $6.25, 30 minutes, about a
dozen times a day, and also departing from Pier 41 on weekends). Ferry tickets include a
free transfer, which you can use on AC Transit buses from Jack London Sq.
TRAIN
Oakland is a regular stop for Amtrak trains operating up and down the coast. From Oak-
land's Amtrak station ( 800-872-7245; www.amtrak.com ; 245 2nd St) in Jack London Sq,
you can catch AC Transit bus 72 to downtown Oakland (and the free Broadway Shuttle on
weekdays and Saturday night), or take a ferry across the bay to San Francisco.
Amtrak passengers with reservations on to San Francisco need to disembark at the
Emeryville Amtrak station, one stop away from Oakland. From there, an Amtrak bus
shuttles you to San Francisco's Ferry Building stop. The free Emery Go Round
( www.emerygoround.com ) shuttle runs a circuit that includes the Emeryville Amtrak sta-
tion ( 800-872-7245; www.amtrak.com ; 5885 Horton St) and MacArthur BART. Emeryville is
also the terminus for the California Zephyr (9:10am, one daily departure) to Chicago via
Reno, Salt Lake City and Denver.
Getting Around
TO/FROM THE AIRPORT
BART is the cheapest and easiest transportation option. From the Coliseum/Oakland Air-
port BART, the new Oakland Airport Connector train ($6, 15 minutes) runs directly to the
airport every five minutes during BART hours.
SuperShuttle ( 800-258-3826; www.supershuttle.com ) is one of many door-to-door
shuttle services operating out of Oakland International Airport. One-way service to San
Francisco destinations costs about $27 for the first person and $15 for the second. East
Bay service destinations are also served. Reserve ahead.
A taxi from Oakland International Airport to downtown Oakland costs about $30; to
downtown San Francisco about $60.
