9.7 Some processes from MARIUN.
• Systems thinking enables us to widen our system boundaries to include
all risks relevant to the safety of a structure.
• Process maps can be used to connect data, information, people, and
functions, and provide routes by which we can manage changes more
effectively.
• Presently, there is a clear distinction between hard and soft system risks,
and they are treated as though they are independent. Case histories
demonstrate that problems often occur at their interface. Hard systems
are embedded in soft systems and they can be integrated by modelling
them both as an interacting sets of process holons.
• Italian fl ags based on interval probability theory are a practical way of
representing the dependability of evidence in a process model. They can
be qualitative - or with careful understanding of the underlying math-
ematics, they can also be used quantitatively.
