Fasten three bamboo poles near the top, teepee fashion, so that your yard-long bean vines can twine up
around them.
Dig in compost and a balanced fertilizer and install poles before planting. Poles
should be about 8 feet tall. I use three poles, teepee-fashion, tied together at the top,
and let several vines grow up the poles. Arranging them teepee-fashion eliminates the
need to set the poles deeply into the ground, and they make an attractive feature in your
garden. Leave 4 or 5 feet between teepees. Of course, you can grow them up any sup-
port that is convenient for you — fencing, netting, straight poles, or whatever. In that
case, allow about 4 inches between plants.
