In-Depth Information
Appearance
This bean grows on a somewhat straggly looking vine that is very aggressive; it's the
only vegetable I've grown that can successfully hold its own against spaghetti squash.
The flowers are large and very pretty, a combination of white and pale lavender. The
pods look like elongated, slender green beans and range from 14 to 18 inches long.
How to Grow
Getting started. Yard-long beans are very, very sensitive to cold, but it can't get too hot
for them. In warm climates this is a much easier crop to grow, but with a little care it can
be successful in cooler climates, like that of New England. Plant about two weeks later
than bush beans; the ground must be truly warm and all thought of frost a dim memory.
