In-Depth Information
In Chapter 12, Garkvenko and Tiberghien analyze information and
communication technology (ICT) diffusion in Kazakhstan as it relates to
tourism in the country. The chapter focuses on the Internet presence of
tourism players as well as how tourism commodities are distributed via
the web. The authors detail how the level of ICT adoption by the travel
industry in Kazakhstan varies substantially according to sector and even
within sectors, but is mostly lower than the practices in western countries;
thus, there is significant potential for further development.
Next, Chapter 13 by Kantarci focuses on the perceptions of foreign in-
vestors on the tourism market with respect to both general investment con-
ditions and tourism specific investment conditions in Central Asia includ-
ing Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Based on the
empirical findings, the chapter makes the argument that those emerging
markets such the ones that were covered in the study should develop cre-
ative and sustainable investment incentives and plans to promote their
respective countries. Drawing such investment is critical to the region's
development from a tourism point-of-view.
Lastly, the Chapter 14 offers a chronology of Central Asia covering its
history from ancient times to the modern day. As described by the author
Pala, the events that occurred on this ancient continent form an important
part of world history. The chronology will help those studying the politi-
cal, economic and cultural history as well as other aspects of the region to
grasp the subject matter from all perspectives. It presents political history
and cultural history together and thus shows in which political conditions
certain cultural artifacts arose. It is this rich history that serves as the foun-
dation for the present. Thus, an enhanced understanding of this history
aids in carving the most desirable path going forward.
