Registan Square (tr.wikipedia.org).
Registan square is actually the city's oldest market place. Throughout
the history this open place has seen many invasions, celebrations and vic-
tory parades. Timur's grandson Ulugh Beg (1393-1449) built a madrasah
here. Ulugh Beg himself was a great scholar in astronomy and mathemat-
ics. His pursuit for higher science pushed this structure to be artistically,
technically and scientifically the best example, thus making it a guide for
his successors to come. The most important and amazing feature of Ulugh
Beg madrasah is its mosaics that are cut so accurately with fine patterns,
bright colors and excellent polish (Pander, 2001).
When one looks straight to Registan Square, he would see the Ulugh
Beg Madrasah on the right, Tilla-Kari Madrasah further back in the mid-
dle and Sher-Dor Madrasah on the left. Tilla-Kari Madrasah (1646-1660)
may be the smallest of all, nevertheless its marbles gilded with gold leafs
highlight its beauty and carries it forward (Esin, 1997).
Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619-1635/36) was the last one to be built out of
the tree. It gets its name from the lion figures made of mosaics above the
main portal. Structure adds color to Registan Square with its fluted dome's
bright mosaics. All tree madrasahs at this square still stand today with
their exceptionally striking colors, astonishing mosaics and monumental
portals, still waiting to serve science and humanity (Esin, 1997).
