briskly above the city. Double dome of the tomb has later been a model
for many Islamic buildings. Inside the tomb Timur's family tree and story
of his life are engraved upon an agate gravestone. Along with him his
sons, grandson Ulugh Beg and his Sheikh also lay here (Pander, 2001). It
wouldn't be correct to portray this shrine as a jewel that Samarkand wears.
Queen had buried his most loyal son Timur, deep inside of her heart. In
this sense today, Timur's tomb (Fig. 13) stands with its battered beauty
as a monument to all of the pain and suffering on one hand, happiness
and good fortune on the other; that the city has witnessed all throughout
history. Undoubtedly Timur has given Samarkand its most beautiful ar-
chitectural gifts and indeed, he lies comfortably in her heart never to be
forgotten.

REGISTAN SQUARE
Registan Square is the royal crown queen Samarkand wears with conceit.
Those who see this square feel themselves to be very small as if in pres-
ence of a magnificent queen. Buildings encircling the square look like
embroidered jewelry. Tons of gold and gorgeous ceramics were used to
embellish these structures and further more the design that is beyond their
time bewilders the onlookers (Fig. 14).
