of Mawarannahr resulted in Istemi Qaghan taking full control of the Silk
Road trade and the formation of first Turkish-Byzantium direct relations
in 567, due to the ambassadorship of the Turkish prince Maniakh of Sa-
markand. Maniakh recommended removing the Persians out of the silk
trade. Consequently the region enjoyed its most prosperous times during
6th and 7th century. The mural paintings of this period in Afrsiab and Pan-
jikent palaces reflect a perfect synthesis of Turkic-Sogdian art (Figs. 5-8).
