The essence of this chapter is to bring together all the lessons we've learned
thus far throughout the topic to create a workable plan for the management of
your career and the attainment of your innovation goals. We know what leader-
ship is, we know what innovation is, and hopefully you've taken some time to
learn about your field and discover some opportunities for yourself. Now it's
time to take what we've been theorizing about and apply some skills to our
lives. Don't ask for permission, don't wait for someone to offer, don't even wait
until the timing is perfect - make your move NOW! You may not be able to get
everything done today, but you need to get started today.
I've never known a person who consistently applied these steps and prin-
ciples and did not ultimately achieve her goal, or come very close to it. In most
cases, the application of these simple guidelines on a consistent basis will lead
to you actually exceeding your goal. My life is certainly an example of this
occurring. My original goal was to get my BS in engineering, own a BMW,
and raise my daughter. I always share with young people that I didn't even
