In-Depth Information
know what the initials PhD meant - when Dr Howard Adams told me I should
consider this as my ultimate academic goal. I applied these simple steps I'm
sharing here and the result was exceeding the goals I'd set for myself. The rea-
sons are many, including the new-found vision I had, each small success caus-
ing me encouragement, my increased knowledge and confidence, and, last, but
certainly not least, the many people eager to support me in attaining those goals.
There will be times when things we can't control are preventing or delay-
ing the attainment of our goal. But please, don't let this be a reason to let go of
your dreams, vision, and goals. Maybe you are not in the right “season” for the
attainment of these goals, but that doesn't mean that in six months or maybe six
years you can't overcome that barrier, or that other resources won't be in place
to help. Ask yourself if the plan you've come up with for yourself is right for
the season of your life and if it is manageable. Have you considered all of your
resources? Are you allowing other things to “crowd” out the time, commitment,
and resources needed to attain your goals?
There comes a time when we must each ask ourselves: what are we doing
that is unrelated to the attainment of our goals and how is that impacting our
quest? Often it is a sense of obligation or something that impacts our sense of
identity - maybe you see yourself as a wife and homemaker first. Maybe you
felt obligated to join a topic club your friend started because you wanted to
support her, but your support is no longer needed. It's okay to say no. In fact,
it's healthy. Be honest with yourself. Sit down and talk with someone if you are
really having problems doing what you want and make sure you are not the one
getting in the way of your own goals.
The previous chapters have shared the importance on a national and global
level of our willingness to engage in leadership and innovation in the realization
of our greatest dreams. The impact as well as personal satisfaction that comes
from realizing your vision has also been discussed. Then we shared some of the
challenges, obstacles, and resistance that we may face in pursuit of these goals
from a cultural, personal, and organizational level.
The bottom line is this: we are fully capable of moving our dreams, visions,
and most awesome ambitions into the passionate life we want to live. Yes, as
sure as you are reading the pages of this topic - you can live your dream (see
Figure 8.1 ). The question then becomes, will we do what we need to do in
order to see it realized? The obvious answer is yes, but this decision must be
made and recommitted to throughout the process, in the toughest times and
most difficult times, and sometimes on a daily basis. We must be committed
enough to get back up when we're knocked down and when everyone in our
world is saying that we can't do it. It's those times when the strength of our
commitment to our visions is tested. Pass the test. The rewards are great when
we pass the test. Remember you are a winner - winners may fall back for a
time, fall down, adapt the plan, regroup, or even stop to rest for a moment.
But we always get back up because winners will not take no for an answer.
Winners Don't Quit.
