Apparatus
Ion chromatographic system consisting of a Toyo Soda Model HLC-6DL ion
chromatograph [62]. A Toyo Soda Model CM-8 conductivity detector with a range of
5µs cm −1 . The sample loop volume was 0.1ml and a flow rate of 1.0ml min −1 was
employed. The separation column, 4.6mm id 50mm long, made of Teflon, was packed
with porous silica based anion exchanger of TSK gel 1C-Anion SW (Toyo Soda, particle
size 5±1 µm capacity 0.1mequiv g −1 . The column and the conductivity detector was
maintained at 27±1°C.
EDTA eluent (1mi mol L −1 ) was prepared by dissolving ethylene diaminetetraacetic
acid disodium salt in deionised water and adjusting to pH 6.0 with 0.1mol L −1

hydroxide.
T able 12.20 shows the retention times of chloride, phosphate (H 2 PO), nitrite, nitrate,
sulphate, calcium and magnesium. All of these ions were eluted within 15min. The
calibration curves of these ions by peak height measurements were linear up to the
concentration of 20mg L −1 . The detection limits defined as the concentration
corresponding to twice the
