This reaction eliminates the conjugated double bonds that provide the fluorescence
emission from the complex molecule. Alkali metals can be separated from boron with an
ion exchange resin. In another paper [53] they described the formation and properties of
two types of complex, a binary flavone-boric acid complex and a ternary flavone-boric
acid-oxalic acid complex, in anhydrous acetic acid. The flavones studied were morin and
quercetin and the proposed structural formulae are:
