Mid-July/Mid-August: Paris, Quartier d'Eté. Music and dance
festival in various venues.
Mid-July/Mid-August: Paris Plage. For several years, the
city of Paris has been importing sand and creating a 3-km
beach along the Seine. Chairs, cafés, showers, fountains,
palm trees and three million visitors—sunbathers or
strollers—enliven the quais in summer.
July/August: Musique en l'Île. Concerts in the Eglise Saint-
Louis, on the Île Saint-Louis.
Mid-July/Mid-September: Festival Estival de Paris. Classical
music in churches and museums.
Late July: Arrivée du Tour de France Cycliste. The end of
the Tour de France on the Champs-Elysées.
August
15 Aug: Assumption Day —a national holiday

Mid-Sept: Opera season opens.
Mid-Sept: Jazz at La Villette. One of the best jazz festivals,
featuring international groups.
Mid-Sept: Fête de l'Humanité. Workers' festival at La
Courneuve, a northern suburb. Sponsored by L'Humanité ,
the independent (formerly Communist) newspaper. Stands
of international communist parties offer crafts and foods
of their countries, plus music and a lively atmosphere.
Mid-Sept: Journées du Patrimoine. Long lines form one
weekend each year when the major buildings and palaces
of France are opened to the public. In Paris, this includes
the Palais de l'Elysée (the President's official residence),
the Matignon (the Prime Minister's official residence),
the Palais du Luxembourg (the Senate) and hundreds of
other buildings.
Mid-Sept to December: Festival d'Automne. Major
performing arts festival.
October
First Sunday: Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Horse race at
Longchamp.
