1 Nov: Toussaint (All Saints Day) —a national holiday.
Parisians visit the graves of their loved ones in advance of
Jour des Morts (All Souls Day), placing chrysanthemums
on their graves. On this one day, the oldest cemetery
in Paris, the Cimetière du Calvaire, which dates from
the 13th century, is open to visitors. Toussaint follows
Halloween, which has caught on in Paris.
2 Nov: Jour des Morts (All Souls Day).
1-7 Nov: Paris Open. Tennis championships at the Palais
Omnisports de Paris-Bercy.
Early Nov: Salon d'Automne. Art salon in the Grand
Palais.
11 Nov: Armistice 1918 —a national holiday. Veterans Day,
celebrating the World War I Armistice.
Mid-Nov: Trophée Lalique de Patinage Artistique. Figure
skating competition at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy.
Mid-Nov: Paris Festival of Sacred Art. Concerts in churches
around the city.
Third Thursday: Arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau.
Always a great source of conversation among wine lovers
and critics.
Late Nov: Salon du Chocolat. Great chocolate fair and market
at the Carrousel du Louvre, 99 rue de Rivoli, 75001. More
than 100 European chocolate-makers display and offer their
products, and give demonstrations of chocolate recipes.
December
All Month: Christmas in Paris. Animated crèche (nativity
scene) outside the Hôtel de Ville. Main shopping streets are
illuminated and store windows in the department stores
are beautifully decorated. Stores are generally allowed to
remain open on Sundays in December.
Early Dec: Festival du Cinéma Gay et Lesbien de Paris.
Week-long gay and lesbian film festival, held at the Forum
des Images, at Forum Les Halles.
