MARY ANNE ROSE
These days, Stanley Bard is on the warpath against long-term tenants. 120 He feels
we pay too little rent—and we do now, but hey, he overcharged at the begin-
ning—andhetriestopickoffpeople,threateningthem,onebyone.Hetriedtoget

down the hall. It costs one-thousand-five-hundred-dollars per month, and he told

vor! I think we all appreciate the person Stanley once was, and feel badly for his

There are folks who, if Stanley gets on the elevator, they get off immediately.

Timur actually saw Fuchsia Gold, the dominatrix, a couple of years ago in the
Chelsea lobby, handing out flyers to promote some party or event.

As an artist, I'm just getting back into it. After I got clean, I sat down wrote a
poem,myfirstinfiveyears.I'vebeenwritingforfiveyearssince.Whathappened
when Igot offofdrugs—ormaybe it was just a part ofgetting older and not being
in my twenties and early thirties—was that I start realizing maybe I wasn't James
Joyce.
I've been really blessed in my life to have older male figures, along with my
father, who have been influential mentors. The ones who have chosen to reject
their privilege, I've learned from them. I'm so lucky, having known Herbert Hun-
cke and those guys. I'm forty-four, about to turn forty-five, and my parents are a
little worried, but I know what's up for me. And it's not good.
It's not a nice thing to be poor and old in America. I've seen it with the hippie
generation now, with people I admire. I know what I'm getting into. I've seen it,
but I continue to live that type of life. I have no children, so I have the luxury to
dothat.Butthat'soneofthemanythingsthatmymalementorswhorejected their
privileged backgrounds taught me—personal responsibility. The older I get, the
more of an anarchist I am. I'm forty-five and living on a couch in an old yippie
apartment.
