Stepping Out
It wasn't long before the friendship between Dee Dee and Robert expanded beyond their re-
hearsals and they would hang out, wandering Manhattan's streets together.
ROBERT CAMPBELL
Sometimes, Dee Dee and I would go to guitar stores. We'd go walking down in
the city, walking a long way to Matt Umanov Guitars, or Mojo Guitars, to look at
the old antique guitars.
Another time, Dee Dee and I were trying to go see Junior Walker 74 at the
club Tramps. 75 So I said to Dee Dee, “I'll call Steve. He'll get us in.” I called
Steve Weitzman and asked, “Can you get me and Dee Dee Ramone in and get us
a table?”
Steve said, “Robert, I'll do it for you, but I'm not going to do it for Dee Dee.
His ex-girlfriend works here, and she says he used to beat her up.”
“Okay, Steve, I'm sorry.” I hung up and went and told Dee Dee.
Dee Dee got serious as hell. He called up Steve Weitzman and started cussing
him out. So long story short, we got to go up there to Tramps to see Junior Walker
and the All Stars. Junior Walker was really cool, playing saxophone.
Another time, we went to Tower Records and Dee Dee bought the first Ra-
mones album on cassette. When he got up to the cash register, the guy at the re-
gister, of course, knew who he was.
“What? You don't have that record at home?”
Dee Dee just looked at the guy and said, “How many of your records do you
have at home?”
