Enter Drummer
ROBERT CAMPBELL
As our band practices kept going, we got this drummer named Michael who lived

I was still never listening to the tapes like Dee Dee said we were supposed to.
So we got the drummer, and that's when we started practicing at the drummer's
house, which was only about a block away from the Chelsea. So we would just
walk down the street carrying our amps and guitars and go to his place. At the
new drummer's house, he had every type of drum you could imagine. He had this
practice room that had no windows and it was painted black. It was a great room
until we started playing, because we found out that if we left the air conditioner
running while we played, it would blow all the fuses. So when we started playing,
we had to turn off the air conditioner. We would play as long as we could until we
couldn't stand it anymore because the room got hot and humid as hell. Then we
would stop playing and turn the air conditioning back on for a while.
Sometimes, it was kind of hard playing with Dee Dee. To be honest, it seemed
like he wasn't really that good a guitarist. I could play better than he could. But
he told me once that Johnny Ramone had told him, “You are what you are, so you
should just go out and play now, and the tight playing will come later.”
