is data literate? Do you have enough data product authors in your organiza-
tion? Does your organization's culture value data fluency?
Lastly, the inventory has items to assess the building blocks of a data ecosystem .
The DFI measures whether policies and procedures are in place to foster effec-
tive communication with data. Are data consumers, data product authors, and
organizational processes constantly evolving as better knowledge is gener-
ated? How well does your organization deliver the six Ds of a data ecosystem
(Demand, Design, Develop, Discover, Discuss, and Distill)?
By benchmarking strengths and weaknesses of employees, teams, departments,
and divisions within an organization, leaders can better understand areas of
potential miscommunication or low performance. Such a process can also give
organizational leaders an opportunity to recognize rising talent.
This chapter includes a series of tools to help you use the Data Fluency
Inventory, including the survey questions, a scoring guide, a sample intro-
ductory e-mail for conducting the survey, and a data fluency quiz that can
be used for evaluating new hires.
THE DATA FLUENCy INVENTORy SURVEy
QUESTIONS
The Data Fluency Inventory is aligned with the Data Fluency Framework
(Figure 1). There is a component of the DFI survey associated with each quad-
rant of the framework. For example, the first component of the DFI measures
Data Consumer Literacy, shown in the upper left of the framework and detailed
in Chapter 4.
You can use each of the four components of the DFI in a variety of ways.
For example, you can use the inventory as a self-assessment to understand
your own data fluency skill. Alternatively, you can use individual level data
to inform talent management or human capital decisions, such as targeted
training initiatives.
