mansion. There is a needlework collection with pieces attributed to Lady Jane Grey. Pet-
worth's Carved Room features intricate musical instruments and other carvings inspired
by nature. The house's State Bed is considered an English Rococo masterpiece. The col-
lection also boasts a handwritten copy of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, and Petworth dis-
plays one of the earliest English globes in existence.
Petworth's medieval chapel was restored in the late 1990s, saved from the ravages of
deathwatch beetle. The estate's servant quarters were used until 1947; today they highlight
200 years of below stairs history. Petworth's kitchen overflows with a 1,000-piece copper
cookware collection.
And that's just on the inside. Petworth's grounds include Capability Brown's serpentine
lake and there is an ancient tree walk in the park with trees up to 1,000 years old. The park
is home to the largest herd of Fallow Deer in England.
