Longleat — Best Manor House Gone Wild
…the local council…had readily granted the Marquess of Bath permission to erect “a
fence to restrict movement” of some unspecified animals. “Good God,” one councilor
later remarked, “I thought the fence was for deer !”

This is a survival story. It's about an endangered estate and country house owned by the
same aristocratic family for a dozen generations. Unlikely as it seems, the story also in-
cludes a menagerie of wild and endangered animals.
Sometimes, in order to hold onto what you love, you must sacrifice some of what you have.
Longleat is the stately home, private residence, and seat of the Marquesses of Bath. In
