'A temple to lift your spirits' - so observed King Rama V of Siam when he stayed
here in 1898 during his grand Norwegian tour. Over a century later, there's no reason to
gainsay his judgement. High on the hill above Geiranger (take Rv63, direction Grotli) the
venerable family-owned Utsikten, constructed in 1893, has stunning views over town and
fjord.

This warmly re-
commended 48-room hotel does great buffet breakfasts and dinners. It's well worth paying
the higher rate for a room with a balcony and magnificent view over the fjord. Take the
shoreside Rv63, direction Åndalsnes, for 2km to find yourself half a world away from the
ferry terminal bustle. Ask to see its magnificent 1931 Buick, once used to shuttle guests
around.

The large, spectacularly situated Union Hotel is high on the hill above town. It's a
healthyplacewithacoupleofpools(oneindoorandheated),saunaandspa.Evenifyou're
not staying here, head up the hill, then roll back down after tucking into their gargantuan
dinner buffet (Nkr475), which has a minimum of 65 dishes. The restaurant also offers à la
carte (mains Nkr310 to Nkr325) and 'Taste the Coast', its four-course set menu (Nkr490).

A short walk from the ferry terminal, Geiranger Camping is sliced
through by a fast-flowing torrent. Though short on shade it's pleasant and handy for an
early morning ferry getaway.
Below the Grande Fjord Hotel are a couple of friendly, tranquil campsites in unbeatable
locations. Even if you're carrying a weighty pack, it's well worth the 2km walk northwest-
wards to get there. Both rent rowing and motor boats.
