day/day). He also does daily kayaking-with-gentle-hiking trips (adult/child 800/640), last-
ing five to six hours, to a trio of the finest destinations around the fjord. As his publicity
flyer says with pride, these are 'the only trips available in Geiranger that have no environ-
mental impact'.
Boat Tours
Geiranger Fjordservice ( 70 26 30 07; www.geirangerfjord.no ) does 1½-hour sight-
seeing boat tours (adult/child Nkr155/80, up to 4 sailings daily mid-May-mid-Sep).
Its kiosk is within the tourist office. From mid-June to August, it also operates a smaller,
15-seater boat (Nkr395/195) that scuds deeper and faster into the fjord.
Hiking
Get away from the seething ferry terminal and life's altogether quieter. All around Geir-
anger there are great signed hiking routes to abandoned farmsteads, waterfalls and vista
points. The tourist office's aerial-photographed Hiking Routes map (Nkr10) gives ideas for
18 signed walks of between 1.5 and 5km.
A popular longer trek begins with a ride on the Geiranger Fjordservice sightseeing boat.
A steep 45-minute ascent from the landing at Skagehola brings you to Skageflå, a precari-
ouslyperched hillside farm. Youcan retrace yoursteps tothe landing, where the boat stops
(on request; tell the crew on the way out or just wave). To stretch your legs more, continue
over the mountain and return to Geiranger via Preikestolen and Homlung.
Cycling
Geiranger Adventure ( 47 37 97 71; www.geiranger-adventure.com ) will drive you
up to Djupvasshytta (1038m), from where you can coast for 17 gentle, scenically splendid
kilometres by bike down to the fjord; allow a couple of hours. It also rents bikes (Nkr50/
200 per hour/day).
