Sogndal, though not the area's prettiest place, makes a good base for a trio of magnificent
day drives: Jostedalen and Nigardsbreen ( Click here ), Urnes ( Click here ), Lustrafjord and
the spectacular Sognefjellet circuit.
Sights & Activities
Sogn Folkmuseum FOLK MUSEUM
( www.dhs.museum.no ; adult/child Nkr70/ 30; 10am-3pm or 5pm daily May-Sep,
Mon-Fri Oct-Apr) Extensive and open-air, it's between Sogndal and Kaupanger, beside
the Rv5. More than 30 buildings, including farms, a schoolhouse and a mill, have been
brought from their original sites and embedded in the surrounding woods. Each is well
documented in Norwegian and English. There are three short, themed walking trails with
informative panels (reception has English translation sheets). Children's can pet the farm
animals, build their own log cabin and indulge in other backwoods activities, and there are
several gorgeous picnic spots.
Sogn Fjordmuseum MARITIME MUSEUM
( 10am-3pm or 5pm May-Sep) Located in Kaupanger , 2km southeast along the Rv5
and related to the much larger Folk Museum, it has a collection of 19th- and 20th-century
fishingandfreightboatsandequipmentandsomestrikingoldphotos,illustrating inpartic-
ular the coastal trade in wood for Bergen's expanding construction needs.
Stave Church STAVE CHURCH
(adult/child Nkr45/35; 9.30am-5.30pm early Jun-mid-Aug) Kaupanger's main
claim for your attention was raised in 1184. It impresses from within by its sheer height.
Muchofwhatyouseedatesfromafundamentalrenovationinthe17thcentury.Wallpaint-
ings in the nave feature musical annotation, while vine and flower motifs entwine around
the chancel. The Celtic-style chancel arch is unique.
