100-bed hotel, approaching its first century, has been run by the same family for four gen-
erations. It enjoys a wonderful location; most rooms have a balcony and view of the fjord
and a neatly cropped lawn sweeps down to the water. The outdoor pool's heated and there
are a couple of rowing boats and fishing gear, loaned free to guests. The restaurant has a
nightly buffet (Nkr265) that's excellent value and open to all-comers.
Kjørnes Camping CAMPGROUND €

May-Sep) This large, well-maintained campground, where the young owners have expan-
dedandimprovedfacilities,enjoysagorgeousfjord-sidesetting.Choosealargecabinwith
full facilities on the main site or, to be almost alone with the forest at your back and the
fjord before you, take one a short way along the old road to Kaupanger. Kjørnes Camping
is 3km from Sogndal off the Rv5, direction Lærdal.
Loftesnes Pensjonat GUESTHOUSE €

House restaurant is great value. Nine of its 12 rooms have a bathroom and there are self-
catering facilities and a rooftop terrace. If no one's around, take any room that has its key
in the lock and sign the guest register. If no one has turned up before you leave, pay the
restaurant staff downstairs (cash only).
Sogndal Vandrerhjem HOSTEL €

well-equipped, summertime-only HI-affiliated hostel, near the bridge that carries the Rv5,
functions as a boarding school during the rest of the year.
