This large ceremonial hall, adja-
cent to the Rosenkrantz Tower, was constructed by King Håkon Håkonsson from 1247-61
and completed for his son's wedding and coronation. The roof was blown off in 1944
thanks to the explosion of a Dutch munitions boat, but extensive restoration has been car-
ried out. There are hourly guided tours in summer.

Bergen's cathedral, also known as
St Olav's Church, is well worth a visit. The stonemasonry in the entrance hall was
carved by the same stonemasons as those who adorned Westminster Abbey's chapter
house in London. From mid-June until the end of August, there are free
organ recitals

collection of predominantly 18th- and 19th-century pieces by international and Norwegian
