Chapter 4
Cisco Unity/Unity Connection
There are many Cisco voice-messaging solutions, including the following:
Cisco Unity Express (CUE): This router-based platform supports voicemail and integrated messaging. More information on
CUE can be found in Chapter 5, “IOS IP Telephony Skills.”
Cisco Unity Connection: Based on a Linux server, this platform supports voicemail and integrated messaging.
Cisco Unity: Based on Windows Server, this platform provides voicemail and integrated/unified messaging.
Cisco Unity Connection supports local message storage and supports active/active redundancy and directory synchronization. Other
features include speech recognition, VPIM support, Cisco Fax server support, SMS message notification, and secure messaging.
Unity integrates with Cisco CUCM and a variety of legacy PBX systems. It can also integrate with other Unity systems and more
traditional voicemail solutions. The capability to integrate with PBX and voicemail systems allows a relatively smooth transition to IP
telephony.
Depending on the specific release, Unity can be installed on either a Windows 2000 or 2003 server, and it uses either Microsoft
Exchange or Lotus Domino as its message store. Note, however, that Lotus Domino is not supported in Cisco Unity 8.0.
Integration
It is possible to integrate Unity with a variety of phone systems, including Cisco CUCM and traditional PBXs. Specific types of
integration include the following:
Cisco CUCM
