EATING
In keeping with its status as one of Sweden's largest cities and major university centres, Uppsala boasts an impressive range
of sophisticated restaurants . Almost all of them are located in the grid of streets bordered by the Fyrisån River, St
Olofsgatan and Bangårdsgatan, and since it can be busy in Uppsala in summer, booking a table is worthwhile.
Güntherska hovkonditori Östra Ågatan 31 . Gloriously
old-fashioned café dating from 1870 which serves simple
lunch dishes for around 80kr, and a mouthwatering selection
of cakes and pastries under the mellow light of ageing
chandeliers. Mon-Sat 8am-6pm, Sun 10.30am-5pm.
Hambergs fisk Fyris torg 8 T 018 71 21 50. A smartly
tiled seafood restaurant with a massive lobster hanging in
the window. It serves a good selection of Mediterranean
fish which is imported directly from France, as well as the
usual Swedish classics like salmon. Particularly popular at
lunchtime. Reckon on 170-270kr per dish. Tues-Sat
11.30am-10pm.

Upmarket Swedish home cooking served in genteel
surroundings resembling an elegant country manor or
alfresco at the rear. Mains are 160-235kr and feature
classics such as fried meatballs, Wallenbergare and

Sat & Sun noon-4pm & 5pm till late.

Domtrappkällaren St Eriks Gränd 15 T 018 13 09 55.
One of the most chi-chi places in town, with an old vaulted
roof and a great atmosphere. Mains such as honey-fried
reindeer fillet with raspberry sauce or oven-baked halibut
go for 175-325kr; excellent set lunches, too, for just 95kr.

Fågelsången Munkgatan 3. Plying the masses with
caffeine since 1954, this agreeable café is an Uppsala
institution, renowned for its terrific selection of pastries
and cakes as well as good-value sandwiches: a cheese and
ham ciabatta costs just 40kr. Mon-Fri 7.30am-7pm, Sat
& Sun 9am-6pm.
