Ofvandahls Sysslomangatan 3-5 T 018 13 42 04. Near
the old part of town, this lively café with antique furniture
and fittings opened in 1878. Don't leave town without
trying the famous home-made cakes ( tårtor ) which include
the delicious blueberry cake and mouthwatering Black
Forest gateau. Mon-Fri 7.30am-6pm, Sat 9am-5pm,
Sun 11am-5pm.
Peppar Peppar Suttungs gränd 3 T 018 13 13 60. This
cosy red-brick building, once a tractor factory, has mutated
into one of Uppsala's finest restaurants serving modern
Swedish-French dishes such as leg of lamb in red wine
sauce with celery purée: mains 168-288kr. Mon-Wed
5pm till late, Thurs-Sun 4pm till late.
Stationen Olof Palmes Plats 6 T 018 15 35 00. Located
in Uppsala's glorious old station building from 1866, this
place is three things in one: a Parisian brasserie, a London
pub and a Roman café, serving something for everyone.

Svenssons Åkanten St Eriks torg T 018 15 01 50. The
wonderful riverside summer-only restaurant beside the
Saluhallen market hall has great views and is a firm
favourite with Uppsala folk. Lots of barbecue dishes such as
chicken breast (175kr) as well as lighter salads (170kr).

08. This is one of Uppsala's most popular eating spots,
specializing in deep-pan pizzas from 125kr. Other mains
include a few Asian-inspired dishes such as Thai chowder
(175kr) and Malaysian grill (165kr) as well as burgers
(159kr). Daily 5pm till late.
Tilltugg Vaksalagatan 24 T 018 12 97 01. A style-
conscious lounge bar with light-grey leather chairs and a
bar dressed in mosaic tiles. It serves a terrific range of tapas
for 27-69kr, ranging from olives to garlic-and-chilli
scampi. Mixed tapas plates from 99kr. Wed & Thurs
6-11pm, Fri & Sat 6pm-1am.
Villa Romana Gamla Torget 4 T 018 12 50 90. A decent
Italian restaurant with elegant old wallpaper and a nice
wooden floor serving pasta dishes such as linguine with
scallops for 159-175kr and meat and fish mains courses,
including grilled sirloin in marsala, at 175-265kr. Mon-Fri
11am-11pm, Sat & Sun noon-11pm.

DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
By evening Uppsala's large student population makes its presence felt and more often than not the city centre is abuzz with
life. The most popular places for a drink are all within easy walking distance of each other and are listed below.

06 80. Uppsala's premier spot for live jazz (Fri & Sat nights)
located in the converted goods sheds known as Östra
Station behind the main train station. Also serves light bar
snacks. Mon-Sat 4pm till late.
O'Connors Storatorget 1 T 018 14 40 10. A first-floor
Irish pub in the main square with over forty different
beers on tap and a staggering two hundred whiskey
varieties. It's a good place to start the evening - always
busy and fun. Mon-Thurs 4pm-2am, Fri & Sat
2pm-3am, Sun 2pm-1am.

Attached to the Uppsala hotel, this is one of the better
British pubs in town. People flock here for the After Work
happy hour (Mon-Fri 5-7pm) which includes a finger
buffet. Mon-Thurs 5pm-midnight, Fri & Sat 4pm-1am,
Sun 5-10pm.
BARS, CLUBS AND LIVE MUSIC
Birger Jarl Nedre Slottsgatan 3 T 018 13 50 00. A fun
and popular place for a drink and a favourite hangout for
Uppsala's large student population. Bar snacks such as
burgers and ribs are available. A good bet, too, for live
music. Fri & Sat 9pm till late.
Flustret Svandammen 1 T 018 10 04 44. This fancy,
twin-towered, Tivoli-style building has consistently been
one of the busiest drinking holes in town since the 1950s,
attracting students and locals alike. A pub and nightclub
rolled into one that really rocks at the weekend. Fri & Sat
5pm-3am.

surrounds of this urban loft bar would fit perfectly in New
York. Located in the roof space of the Saluhallen, this is
Uppsala at its most sophisticated. Times vary according to

Gamla Uppsala
Five kilometres to the north of Uppsala, three huge royal burial mounds dating back to
the sixth century mark the original site of the town, Gamla Uppsala . According to
legend, they are the final resting places of three ancient kings - Aun, Egil and Adlis.
Though the site developed into an important trading and administrative centre, it was
originally established as a pagan settlement and a place of ancient sacrificial rites by the
