is hidden behind a plain stuccoed wall; once you have pushed your way through
the trees that have grown over the entrance archway, you'll see a rambling mix of beams
and windows, with a fine little topiary garden hidden beyond a passage to the right.
The garden was laid out in 1766 for the future wife of King Gustav III, who was to
spend one night at the beautiful eighteenth-century
Gamlegård house
opposite.
The windmill
On Södra Storgatan, take the opening to the left of the old cream brick building at no.
31, opposite the modern Maria Församling House, to find a real historical gem. After a
fairly arduous climb of 92 steps, you'll find a handsome nineteenth-century
windmill
,
which you're free to enter using a narrow ramp. Around the windmill are a number of
exquisite farm cottages, and inside the low (120cm) doors is a treasure trove of items
from eighteenth-century peasant interiors: straw beds, cradles, hand-painted grandmother
clocks and the like. A further reward for your climb is the fact that one house, built in
1763 and brought to this site in 1909, serves
waffles:
