view, showing only slight reflections. Setting the Refractive Index will cause the bottle to reappear. A good
refractive index for many simple plastic materials is around 1.4.
For this very basic plastic, leave the other settings zeroed out. Before moving on to the liquid material,
select the label material and select the Double Sided check box. Because the label will require a UV map,
you will deal with that object last, but it may be important for it to be visible before you continue. The now
empty bottle should look similar to the image in Figure 3-23 .
Now select the Liquid layer (make it visible if you have it hidden) and select the corresponding material
in the Shader Tree. Many of the basic settings for the liquid material will be similar to the clear plastic ma-
terial. To use the clear plastic material as a starting point, right-click on that material in the Shader Tree and
choose Copy, and then right-click on the liquid material and choose Paste. By simply changing the refract-
ive index to 1.33 (the refractive index of water), the bottle will suddenly appear to be full. If you want the
appearance of a different liquid (for example, a colored one), changing the Transparent Color setting will
allow you to achieve a wide variety of styles. Figure 3-24 shows the bottle filled with water.
Creating a UV for the Label
To place an image on the label, you will need to create a UV map that will tell the two-dimensional image
how to map onto the three-dimensional object. Start by clicking on the UV tab; then under the Lists tab (on
the middle right-hand side of the screen, where you find the Properties viewport), select the Texture UV map
under the UV Maps section. What you'll see in the UV space on the left-hand side of the viewport is pretty
much a mess. When the initial shape for the bottle was created as a cylinder, a clean UV map was created
with it, but throughout the modeling process, that UV map has been essentially rendered useless.
