In-Depth Information
is that the default material is too shiny for our purposes. Leave Diffuse Color and Diffuse Amount at their
default settings. The specularity on a material such as this is very low, so change Specular Amount to 3%
and Fresnel to 25%. Any highlights on this dull, rough plastic will be very broad, so increase Roughness to
about 80%. As previously mentioned, reflection and specularity are essentially the same thing, so select the
Match Specular option to keep these two values tied to each other, and select Blurry Reflection to soften the
reflections on the material.
With the basic color and surface attributes set for this material, you will move on to add a procedural
texture, to create a slightly rough surface. Choose Add Layer and select the Noise texture from the Textures
heading. By default, this maps to the Diffuse Color channel. To better visualize the placement and scaling
of this texture, leave it assigned to Diffuse Color for now. To create the desired scale, choose the Texture
Locator section under the texture's Properties tab and set the size for X, Y, and Z to about 0.5 mm. When the
scale of the Noise texture seems appropriate, right-click on Diffuse Color under the Effect channel and from
the drop-down menu, select the Surface Shading section and assign the texture to Bump. At first, the effect
will be far too strong. To decrease the amount of bump, go to the Texture Layers section and set Value 2 to
about 3%-5%. Your material should now look something like the image shown in Figure 3-22 .

At this point, it would likely be beneficial to hide the liquid mesh layer to more clearly see the
transparent plastic material. Simply click the eye icon next to the liquid mesh item to hide that
layer.
Click on the bottle itself to begin work on the clear plastic material. Most transparent materials reflect
very little light back to the viewer, so decrease Diffuse Amount to about 5%. Because the plastic is clean
and smooth, it will likely hold some reflections. Setting Specular Amount to 10% and Fresnel to 60%, and
selecting the Match Specular check box should give a good start to this plastic.
Next, switch to the Material Trans section to start work on the transparent attributes of the material. Al-
though this is a relatively clear plastic, a setting of 1 will likely look a bit too invisible. Setting Transparent
Amount to 95% will give a more appropriate result. With this done, the bottle will all but disappear from
