The Checker texture is a simple pattern that is easy to control. Just like the Cellular texture, colors can be
set for the two parts of the pattern, but these correspond to the grid squares. Alpha works the same way
with these two values as with the Cellular texture. The Type option decides whether the texture exists on
a single plane (Square) or is projected from all directions (Cube). The Transition Width sets the amount of
blur between checkers. Bias and Gain also work as they do with the Cellular texture. Figure 3-12 shows a
simple version of the Checker texture.

Dots
For the most part, the settings for Dots are the same as those covered in the previous two textures. Dot Width
and Transition Width control the size and amount of fade between dots and open space, respectively. For
the Type setting, Square and Cube work the same as with the Checker texture. The added setting (Hexagon)
staggers alternating rows so that the grid is offset. This can be useful for creating machined holes in a sur-
