Painted Grime
Another method for this type of work is painting the details by hand. For this method, a pressure-sensitive
tablet is highly recommended. Follow these steps:
1. To get started, place the white material back in the scene (or unhide it if it was not deleted).
2. Next, you will need a blank image texture to paint on. There are several ways to do this. For this
case, go to the Paint interface tab and then the Utilities section of the toolbox and click Add Color Tex-
ture. This brings up a dialog box to save the new image file.
3. Place the file with the rest of your project and save it as a Targa file to avoid any compression arti-
facts.
4. For this case, a resolution of 2048×2048 should provide enough resolution to work with and allow
for decent performance on most computers.
5. With this image map selected, you can paint directly on the model. Go to the Paint Tools section in
the toolbox and select the Airbrush. The standard brush tip that is selected when a brush is activated is
a soft round one that is not adequate for this type of painting.
6. Select the Procedural Brush to get a more randomized effect.
7. Set the FG color (the color that you will paint with) to black or another dark color and begin to paint
in grime around the scene.
8. Right-clicking will change the brush size. After a few minutes of painting, you can have something
like Figure 12-22 .
