In-Depth Information
Because the displacement is an instance of the Group Mask, this can be adjusted automatically when
changing the Bias on the main texture layer (the Group Mask layer) to increase or decrease the amount of
chipping. There is, however, a way of softening the edge without unlinking the displacement from the Group
Mask. By adjusting the Gain on the instance, it will become separate from the mask, but all of the other
attributes will remain linked. Setting the Gain lower will wear away the edges of the paint layer slightly and
also add a little roughness to the surface of the material. This can be adjusted as much as necessary to get
the proper appearance from the material. In Figure 12-11 , the Gain has been lowered slightly to 95%. For
these two layers, the material is now complete, and you can move on to additional layers of complexity.
Figure 12-11: Softening the displacement layer (lowering the Bias setting) helps to add some additional
roughness to the surface and soften the edges of the paint.
