character. All of the existing texture layers will be used in the tile roof texture, and additional layers will be
added to make the overall material more arbitrary in appearance. Additional texture groups within the clay
material will be used to organize the new material. To create the aged clay, follow these steps:
1. Select the Clay material group and choose Group from the Add Layer menu. Repeat this to add a
second group.
2. Select the Dirt texture layers associated with the basic clay and place them inside the first group.
3. Select the second group and add a procedural texture. For this example, I chose Dented from the
Noise category of the Enhance: modo Textures.
4. Select the group containing the new textures and change the blend mode to Normal Multiply.
5. Set the Size values to 400 mm.
6. Set the texture to Diffuse Amount.
7. Increase the Background Value to 25%.
8. Create an Instance of the Dented texture and set the effect to Roughness.
9. Increase the Background Value to 60%.
10. Create a second instance and set the effect to Reflection Fresnel.
11. The effect of the reflection will likely be too strong for the material. To decrease the effect, the
Background and Foreground Values need to be detached from the main Dented texture. To edit these
values independently, click twice on the purple dots to the left of the fields (they will appear gray).
12. Set the values at 40% and 90% for Background and Foreground, respectively.
13. Create another instance of the main Dented texture.
14. Set the effect to Bump.
15. Detach the Octaves and Dentedness settings (see step 11), and then change these values to 8.0 and
6.0.
The material should now be suitable for a basic tile roof, as shown in Figure 11-12 . To add variation,
you can select some of the tiles and add them to a selection set. You can then make additional changes to
color, diffuse amount, bump, and other channels in much the same way that you added variation to wall and
carpet colors in Chapter 9. Figure 11-13 shows the same material with additional texture layers added in this
manner.
Figure 11-12: With some additional texture layers, the basic clay material is altered for use on the tile roof.
