2. While the procedural texture is mapped to the Diffuse Color layer, it is easy to quickly adjust the
basic parameters. Adjust the size of the texture to get variation without being too busy (I chose 150
mm on all axes).
3. When the scale seems appropriate, change the layer from Diffuse Color to Diffuse Amount.
4. Duplicate the Dirt layer and change the effect to Reflection Fresnel.
5. Change the blend mode to Add. This will slightly increase some reflections along the edges of the
material.
6. Adjust the Background and Foreground Values to fine-tune the effect of this texture.
7. Duplicate the Dirt layer once more and change the effect to Roughness.
8. To make the variation in the Roughness fit with the overall material, choose Background and Fore-
ground Values near the initial Roughness setting (going from about 20% below to 20% above the initial
value).
At this point, the clay material should look like Figure 11-11 . This clay material can be used for a wide
variety of purposes. Save this basic material as a preset so you can quickly access it from any scene. With
some additions, it will make an excellent material for the tile roof.

Decorative accessories, such as outdoor pottery, are relatively smooth and even. Architectural elements,
such as tile roofs, are rougher, more weathered, and varied in their appearance. Start by applying the basic
clay material to the tile roof. Even for a newly constructed roof, this material will look too clean and uni-
form. A greater degree of variance will be required to make this version of the clay have the appropriate
