In-Depth Information
One quick way to create new walls from existing ones is by using the Edge Extend tool. This will allow you
to draw new walls directly from existing ones and retain good, clean polygonal flow. To use this method,
you need a single edge the width of the desired wall, on the edge of the existing wall. To ensure that the edge
is the proper thickness, follow these few simple steps:
1. Use the Slice tool (Shift+C) to make a cut in the center of the wall that will be created. If the wall
will be attached to more than one existing wall, make the slice all the way through the wall.
2. Select the edge (or edges) and turn on the Bevel tool (B).
3. Make sure that the Round Level is set at 0 and bevel to a Value of half the width of the desired wall.
Because the bevel extends in both directions, this will make an edge the correct width.
4. Select the new edge that will connect to the wall and use the Edge Extend tool (Z) to drag out the
new wall.
When extending new walls from existing walls, plan ahead and include space from which you can extend
doorframes and additional walls. Because the Edge Extend tool is measured when the extension is made,
this tool can be used to create exact spaces for new walls by extending to the beginning of a new wall space
and then to the other side of the new wall before continuing. If there is a wall that will intersect two walls
that are not yet created, leave the edges out and then slice through the new walls after they are created. For
this reason, it can be helpful to begin working with the parallel walls, making all of the walls in one direc-
tion first, and then adding the perpendicular walls. By using this technique, all of the interior walls in Figure
8-15 were created in just a few short minutes.
