In-Depth Information
Moving existing edges is another method for creating creases in geometry. Edges can be selected and
moved directly, or the Slide tool can be used to move an edge along the surface of the model. Edges can
be moved either individually, as loops, or in other groupings. Scaling multiple edges either toward or away
from each other can also help to define geometry.
All of the tools for adding and moving edges can be used in conjunction with different action centers and
falloffs. By using these tool modifiers, complex changes to edges and surface detail can be made extremely
quickly. Taking some time to practice these methods on simple geometry (such as a cube) will enable you to
become comfortable with the tools and begin to see the manner in which much more detailed and complex
forms can be created.
Adding Edge Weights to Control Surfaces
Edge weights can be an extremely powerful way to edit geometry. Edge weights work best with models util-
izing PSubs (Shift+Tab). To gain control over the weight of individual vertices and edges, do the following:
1. In the Lists tab, open the Weight Maps section.
2. Click the Subdivision Weight option to activate it.
3. Activate the Vertex Map Weight tool by pressing Shift+W.
4. Click and drag in the viewport to set the weight percentage.
Each edge can be weighted up to the given maximum, which is shown onscreen when using the Edge
Weight tool. Using the maximum setting results in a completely sharp edge, whereas amounts that are near
the maximum value will provide soft rounding at the corners. It is worthwhile to note that this method works
better for sharply creased corners (maximum settings) because softly rounded corners tend to pull on the
adjacent surfaces. Using extra loop slices or a combination of loops and weighting will usually provide the
best results.
Figure 5-5 shows a model created by using edge weights for the creased sections. The model started out
as a simple subdivided cube with the addition of edges and bevels to create the basic form. Then, the Vertex
Map Weight tool was used to add definition.
