with a welcoming, established feel. It serves very good
breakfasts (€6-9) and brunches, and while busy at
weekends, is usually quiet enough through the week to

Part flower shop, part café, part bakery, this Art Deco classic
- named after a Kurt Schwitters poem, whose lines are
elegantly inscribed on the walls inside - is one of the area's
best-known cafés. Slide into one of the red leather
banquettes and sample one of their superb cakes (€4) or a
daily special (€7.50). Daily 8am-2am.

Bonanza to sample the creations of their famed baristas:
perfect lattes and flat whites knocked up on a fancy
Synesso Cyncra machine (one of only three in Europe).

sizeable café on the corner of busy Prenzlauer Allee is a
lovely spot to unwind, with books and magazines to read
during the day, home-made cakes and lunches (€4-9),
plus film screenings and book readings in the evenings.
They also serve up a hearty Irish breakfast at weekends.

Uncluttered, exposed-wood place, just north of
Kollwitzplatz, with imaginative German daily specials
(€8-14), a reasonable Sun brunch (9am-4pm; €11) and
outdoor seating in a pleasantly quiet residential street. Free
wi-fi. Mon-Fri 10am-2am, Sun 9am-2am.
Intersoup Schliemannstr. 31 T 0151 29 11 18 98,

den with a huge selection of excellent soups (€3.50-5) and
a relaxing vibe. The place's trademark soup - Thai lemon
grass, bean sprouts, noodle, coconut milk with chicken,
tofu, fish or shrimp - is well worth a try. It's also one of the
few bars in the area regularly promoting local and
international DJs (upstairs) and bands (downstairs). Mon-

€4) - and a spot of cutely kitsch capitalism. “Buy yourself
happy” is an irrepressibly cheerful place where you can not
only get great coffee and sweet treats, but also buy any of
the secondhand furniture - tables, chairs, lamps,

map p.132. Bohemian Berlin hits its stride in this
collective café where G8 riots are planned and vegan
breakfasts consumed. Everything is organic and the
vegetarian buffet breakfast (until 3pm) is excellent
(€4-8: pay according to how wealthy you consider
yourself ).

is a dearth of decent cafés north of Stargarderstr., but
Sgaminegg is an absolute treasure thanks to its delicious
coffees, home-made lunches - couscous, lentil and south
German dishes (two Munich Weisswürste - sausages
served with a Pretzel - cost €5.20) and a little shop that
sells local produce. Mon-Fri 8.30am-7pm, Sat
10am-6pm.

back, hip hop on rotation and a collection of comfy old
furniture,
is unique even by Prenzlauer Berg's café
standards. The coffees are excellent, as are the inventive
fruit juices, which come with b-boy titles like Nas and MC
Hammer. Mon-Sat 8am-6pm.

p.132. The rumpled and ramshackle living room
atmosphere helps make this a relaxed and sociable
hangout at any time - and the comfy sofas make it
di cult to leave. At weekends a cocktail bar pops up
between its two rooms. Breakfast served until 4pm; a
simple coffee and croissant or roll costs only €2.90. Daily
9am-4am.

Nutcracker and named after the Sugar Plum fairy. The
immaculate interior - all Victorian dolls and tasteful
ornamentation - reflects the menu, which features
delicious wa es, cakes and uniquely presented breakfasts
and lunches (€6-13; book ahead at weekends). Tues-Sun
10am-6pm.

Popular outdoor beer garden, in the courtyard of an 1841
brewery that was resurrected in 2013 to create its own
range of draught beers. With a good restaurant along with
the usual beer garden snacks and daily specials (around €9
for mains). Tues-Sun 5-11pm.
