contemporary surroundings. Lots of veggie choices. Sun-

Bandol sur Mer Torstr. 167 T 030 67 30 20 51;
U-Rosenthaler Platz; map pp.72-73. A former kebab
kiosk refurbished into a tiny but casually upmarket and
hugely popular French restaurant. The menu, chalked up on
the all-black walls, consists of fine French cuisine like
snails, entrecôte and foie gras. There's not too much
innovation for the price (mains around €18) but the food is
consistently good. Daily 6pm-11pm.
Kellerrestaurant im Brechthaus Chausseestr. 125
T 030 282 38 43, W brechtkeller.de; U-Oranienburger
Tor; map pp.72-73. Atmospheric restaurant in the
basement of Brecht's old house, decorated with Brecht
memorabilia, including models of his stage sets. The
Viennese specialities (mains €9-15) are from recipes
dreamt up by Brecht's wife Helene Weigel, a busy actress
with only East German ingredients at her disposal, so don't
expect anything too elaborate or expensive. Reservations
recommended. Daily 6pm until late.
Kuchi Gipsstr. 3 T 030 28 38 66 22, W kuchi.de;
U-Rosenthaler Platz; map pp.72-73. Kuchi might not
serve the best sushi in Berlin, but it's definitely the buzziest
place to eat it, with a classy interior, hipster clientele and
upbeat atmosphere. The menu ranges beyond sushi (nigiri
from €4) to noodles and tempura. At peak times expect to

Unsicht-bar Gormannstr. 14 T 030 24 34 25 00,

pp.72-73. Hugely successful novelty restaurant (run by an
organization of the blind and visually impaired), where you
eat in total darkness. First, pick from one of several three-
or four-course fixed menus (€40-57), including a
vegetarian option, then follow your blind or partially
sighted waiter into the pitch black for your meal. The idea is
that without your eyesight, your other senses will be
heightened, but you're likely to make other discoveries, too,
including how hard it is to judge the amount of food that's
on your plate or fork, or even down your front. Fri & Sat
6pm-1am, Sun-Thurs 5pm-1am.
Weinbar Rutz Chausseestr. 8 T 030 24 62 87 60,
W rutz-weinbar.de; U-Naturkundemuseum; map
pp.72-73. Michelin-starred cuisine on the second floor
and more than a thousand international wines offered in
the ground-floor bar make this a de rigueur stop for
foodies. It's expensive - multi-course menus €90-122 -
but the bar sells slightly cheaper (but still great) home-
style dishes. Tues-Sat: wine bar 4-11pm; restaurant
6.30-10.30pm.

pp.72-73. With the same owners as nearby Portuguese
café Galao , this is the place in Mitte for dumplings -
steamed, baked or in a tasty broth. The food is handmade
and MSG-free, cooked in an open kitchen and served in a
small, but stylish interior. Two-course daily menu €7.50.

soups and noodle dishes (€8-11) from a tiny menu - look
out also for the daily specials on the blackboard, which are
available without meat. Bench seating means you'll
sometimes have to squeeze together with other diners -
expect queues at peak times. Don't miss the delicious
jasmine and artichoke teas, or the zesty fruit smoothies.

pp.90-91. Good selection of bagels, sandwiches and
desserts (including a tasty New York-style cheesecake), but
as with all the cheap eating places in this mall - they're
concentrated in the basement - the noise and bustle don't
exactly create a relaxing atmosphere. There are sofas,
however, and prices are reasonable. Daily 9am-9pm.
Sushi Express Potsdamer Platz 2 T 030 25 75 18 63,
W sushi-expressberlin.de; U- & S-Potsdamer Platz; map
pp.90-91. Tricky to find - it's off the Sony Center courtyard
on a passage to the S-Bahn - but worthwhile for a decent
range of conveyor-belt sushi, especially when there are
half-price offers (Mon-Fri noon-6pm). Hot dishes and
lunchboxes also available, though it's usually packed at
lunchtimes. Main courses €5. Mon-Sat 11.30am-10pm,
Sun 2-10pm.
