revolving restaurant at the top of the TV tower (p.62) serves
a reasonable enough menu of traditional Berlin and
international dishes aimed squarely at tourists. You might
have to pay €12 to access the restaurant and another €15
for a plate of ravioli, but where else can you get to see all of
Berlin in half an hour? Daily: March-Oct 9am-midnight;
Nov-Feb 10am-midnight.

restaurant and homage to Berlin life - and to artist
Heinrich Zille, who used to drink nearby at
(see p.189) and whose illustrations line the wood-clad
walls. Particularly good on the menu of old Berlin
favourites are the Rinderroulade (beef-stuffed cabbage
leaves) and
(marinated pot roast), both

with a wonderfully old-fashioned interior, including a
classic tiled oven, and a great beer garden. The reasonably
priced traditional dishes all have law-themed names, like
Zeugen-Aussage (“eyewitness account”) - a reminder of
the days when people used to drop in on the way to the
nearby courthouse. It's considered so authentically German
that foreign heads of state are often brought here to dine. If
the meaty dishes (€9-14) look too heavy, try the simpler
Boulette

, Berlin's home-made mince-and-herb burger,

up in a small, funky and generally overcrowded cafeteria at
staggeringly low prices. You'll leave very full, €4-6 poorer
and maybe a bit bewildered by the à la carte menu system.

huge triangular bar, Hackbarths attracts a very mixed
crowd. The good choice of food includes tasty breakfasts

the hulking Zionskirche. A little off the beaten track but
worth the detour - particularly if you're heading to the

modern interior, great coffee and decent, unpretentious
food (sandwiches, quiches, soups, cakes), this is a pleasant
spot for breakfast or lunch, and very convenient for a

club for Berlin's English-speaking community. The all-day
breakfasts are good if you're craving a fry-up, and the Irish

Situated in a pleasant courtyard, accessible from both
Sophienstr. and Gipsstr., Barcomi's is a nice place to rest
while gallery-hopping; it serves interesting soups and
American-style baked goodies, as well as great breakfasts.
