Creating Linux virtual machines
On RHEV, you can create a virtual machine from existing virtual machine templates or
from scratch. Since this is our fresh deployment, we are going to learn how to create a vir-
tual machine from scratch, and then in later sections of the chapter, we are going to learn
how to create a virtual machine template and clone a virtual machine using these templates.
General settings
To install a RHEL v6 virtual machine, perform the following steps:
1. Once you log in to
Administrator Portal
, navigate to the
Virtual Machines
tab,
and click on
New VM
.
2. In the
New Virtual Machine Creation
windows, fill in all the required fields.
3. In the
General
tab, select the cluster on which you want to run this virtual ma-
chine.
4. Leave
Based on Template
as
Blank
. Templates are nothing but master copies of
an already created virtual machine with an installed operating system, software
packages, and predefined configuration settings such as the security policy and
more. We need to use this once the virtual machine template has been created for
the mass deployment of identical virtual machines using the existing template.
5. For the
Operating system
field, select
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 x.64
. Other
Linux operating systems such as Fedora, SUSE, and Ubuntu can be virtualized, but
there is a limitation to the Red Hat support for these distributions.
Note
Please refer to the
Supported Virtual Machine Operating Systems
section in Ad-
ministration Guide for detailed information at
https://access.redhat.com/document-
6. In the
Optimized for
field's drop-down menu, you will find the
Server
and
Desktop
options; select
Server Workload
, give a relevant name to the virtual ma-
chine under the
Name
field, and give a meaningful description and comment in the
Description
and
Comment
fields, respectively.
7. Select
Stateless
if you want to run your virtual machine in the stateless mode.
