Ì Dragon's Palate Arequipa 167. Part restaurant, part
art gallery, Dragon's serves a fusion of international and
Peruvian dishes in a wonderful open-air courtyard. Blues,
soul and folk bands liven the scene on Thurs, Fri & Sat
afternoons between 2 and 4pm. There's also a TV room for
rainy days. Mains S15-35. Mon-Sat 9.30am-9.30pm.
Granja Heidi Cuesta San Blas 525. This German-run
place offers all sorts of delights for dairy lovers, from hot
and cold “milky way” drinks (S10) to a variety of natural
yogurt combos. There are plenty of vegetarian options
(S22-29), as well as sweet and savoury crêpes (S19).
Mon-Sat 11.30am-9.30pm.
Greens Santa Catalina Angosta 235, 2nd floor. Once a
laidback informal hangout, Greens has become more of
an affected establishment in recent years. A farm in the
Sacred Valley supplies the organic food, and there are
plenty of veggie dishes to choose from. Mains S30-45.

Ì Jack's Cafe Choquechaca 509. A real gringo hangout
- don't be surprised to see customers standing in line.
The ingredients here come from local suppliers and
the coffee is family grown. Plenty on offer, from English
breakfasts (S18) to hearty home-made soups (S15). Daily
7.30am-11pm.
Juanito's Qanchipata 596. This tiny sandwich joint serves
the best sandwiches (S10-22) in town - just point at what
ingredients take your fancy and it'll all come nicely served
in a large bun. It's the perfect spot to grab a sandwich
before a long bus journey. Mon-Thurs 11am-11pm, Fri
& Sat 11am-midnight.
Korma Sutra Tandapata 909, San Blas. Cusco's Indian
restaurant attracts crowds of Brits itching for generous
portions of onion bhajis (S12) and chicken tikka masala
(S22), all to be washed down with a refreshing mango
lassi (S8). More adventurous types can go for the crispy
tandoori guinea pig (S22). Mon-Sat 1-10pm.
Marcelo Batata Palacio 121. The real draw at Marcelo's
is the wonderful roof terrace with breathtaking views
of the town, where you can enjoy a postprandial pisco
(S15). Try the house speciality, the charbroiled alpaca
tenderloin. Mains S35-39. Daily noon-10pm.
The Muse, Too Tambopata 917, San Blas. Sister
restaurant to The Muse, this smaller joint with an upstairs
seating area offers home-made Western cooking and a
range of vegetarian dishes, all rustled up with organic
greens; try the veggie lasagne (S20). Take your bottle and
get a filtered water refill for just S1. Live music Fri, Sat &
Sun at 8.30pm. Daily 8am-midnight.
Pacha Papa Plazoleta San Blas 120. Set in a pleasant
courtyard, Pacha Papa is one of Cusco's few restaurants
with outdoor seating. The cuisine is Peruvian, with a
variety of meats, including the ubiquitous cuy horneado
(S60) grilled in the outdoor clay oven. Mains S40. Daily
8am-11pm.

Pariwana Hostel Mesón de la Estrella 136 T 084 233 751,
W pariwana-hostel.com. A long-standing favourite among
backpackers, Pariwana has dorms and doubles set around
a lovely interior courtyard dotted with colourful beanbags.
Table tennis, mini-football, TV lounge, book exchange and
drinking games are sure t o ke ep you bu sy. W i-fi, free breakfast

place high up in San Blas has clean and tidy rooms set
on two floors. All have private bath, there's a kitchen for
guests' use, all-day coca tea, wi-fi, free continental
breakfast and free airport pick-up. Ask for a room on the
second floor, fro m w here the re a re spectacular views

The Point Mesón de la Estrella 172 T 084 252 266,
W thepointhostels.com. Cusco's party hostel hits it hard
every night at the lively bar upstairs. Luckily there's a
verdant garden at the back to get some air and come back
to your senses in the morning. Dorms are mostly dark as
they all give onto the interior courtyard an d th e premises

dorms and rooms set around a light interior space. There's
all-day coca tea, wi-fi and laundry service. Staff can help

hostels.com. Cusco's other lively party hostel has a fiesta
every night. Rooms at the back are slightly quieter
although lack sunlight; on the plus side, this means they
are the perfect spot to kic k tha t hango ver. F ree wi-fi and

EATING
There are dozens of stalls at the Mercado San Pedro where
you can get hearty dishes for a bargain S4. Self-caterers
can stock up on fresh produce here too, as well as at Orion
Supermarket, just opposite the San Pedro market.
Ì La Bodega Herrajes 138. This welcoming restaurant
attracts a young, laidback crowd who enjoy the pizzas
(S29) and pastas (S25) in little partitioned dining areas.
The salads (S19) are made with organic ingredients from
the Sacred Valley, and the delicious tiramisú (S12) is large
enough to share. Mon-Sat 8am-10.30pm.
El Café de Mamá Oli Plazoleta Nazarenas 199. This
family-run place is the perfect spot for breakfast or
afternoon tea. Top up your vitamin count with a generous
helping of fruit salad (S8), or opt for a heartier breakfast
(S14). The home-made cakes (S5) are a must. Mon-Sat
8.30am-8pm, Sun 10am-4pm.
