To the left of the cathedral entrance,
along Calle Sucre on the Plazoleta del
Carmen, is a flower market. Turn left
along Padre Aguirre to the ramshackle
clothes market on Plaza San Francisco
and the peach-and-white Iglesia San
Francisco . Five blocks west on a quiet
square is the seventeenth-century Iglesia
San Sebastián . Opposite is the Museo de
Arte Moderno (Mon-Fri 9am-1pm &
3-6.30pm, Sat 9am-1pm; free), which
houses temporary exhibitions of Latin
American modern art.

where you can learn about the process of
making Panama hats, which originated in
Ecuador. he Museo Remigio Crespo Toral
(Mon-Fri 8.30am-1pm & 3-6pm, Sat
10am-noon; free) exhibits pre-Columbian
ceramics as well as colonial and modern
art in a restored nineteenth-century house.
A couple of blocks further east, the
excellent Museo de las Culturas Aborígenes
(Mon-Fri 8.30am-6pm, Sat 9am-1pm;
$2) has an enormous collection of
pre-Hispanic artefacts - second only to
Museo Banco Central in Quito - from
Stone Age tools to Inca ceramics. Calle
Larga has three staircases, the largest
of which is La Escalinata , down to the
riverbank, pleasant for a stroll. East is
the Puente Roto (Broken Bridge), part of
a bridge that once spanned the river.
Along the Río Tomebamba
From the historic centre, head south to
the riverside, where there are several
interesting museums along Calle Larga.
