Convento de São Francisco
Olinda is home to eighteen churches
seemingly tucked away around every
corner. The Dutch burned most of them
down in the seventeenth century, and left
the Portuguese to restore them during the
following centuries. If you only have time
to visit one, head to the impressive
Convento de São Francisco on Rua São
Francisco (Mon-Fri 8am-noon & 2-5pm,
Sat 8am-noon; R$3; T 81 3429 0517), the
country's oldest Franciscan convent. It was
built in 1585 and is comprised of a chapel,
church, cloister and sacristy. Particular
highlights are the tiled cloister depicting
the lives of Jesus and St Francis of Assisi,
and the sacristy's beautiful Baroque
furniture carved from jacaranda wood.
Behind the convent there's a patio with
grand panoramas across the ocean.
Museu do Mamulengo
The fascinating Museu do Mamulengo ,
Rua de Sâo Bento 344 (Tues-Sun
10am-5pm; R$2; T 81 3493 2753),
houses an excellent collection of
more than one thousand traditional
puppets, some dating as far back as the
eighteenth century, with the upper floor
dedicated to sertão bandit-cum-folk
hero, Lampião. Folk puppets, with
diverse outfits and exaggerated faces,
played - and still play - an important
role in religious festivities and street
gatherings, including the famed
Carnaval. As well as being an
irrepressible guide, curator Enio Mariz
de Oliveira is a veritable fount of expert
knowledge on all things cultural,
Pernambucan and Brazilian, from
literature to music to film.
