views of the city and bay. Atmospheric
but slightly dishevelled early nineteenth-
century mansions and walled gardens line
the streets; the resident community here
enjoys something of a bohemian
reputation. Santa Teresa is Rio's main
artistic neighbourhood: in July or August
around one hundred artists open their
studios for
Portas Abertas
, offering the
public an opportunity to look (as well as
to enjoy an enormous street party)
- though on any weekend the
bairro
is
buzzing with visitors. The traditional and
most picturesque way to get to Santa
Teresa is to take the
bonde,
Rio's last
remaining
electric tram
line, but due to
chronic underfunding and a series of
accidents it's sadly out of use until at least
2014 and probably much longer. For
now, ascend on foot or by bus #6, #7 or
#14 from Avenida Gomez Freire in
Lapa or Avenida Nilo Peçanha in Centro
(near Metrô Carioca).
Santa Teresa's tiny centre “square”,
Largo do Guimarães
, is a great place to
hang out for a drink or meal at any
number of lively bars and restaurants
nearby - every evening except Monday,
but especially throughout the weekend.
From here, more great bars are staggered
along the bus/tram route westwards,
while downhill to the east it's an
enjoyable ten-minute walk to art gallery
