in a modernist building surrounded by
gardens. It holds a reasonable, eclectic
collection of twentieth-century art,
though its best works by Matisse, Picasso,
Dalí and Monet were stolen in an
audacious raid during Carnaval 2006,
the culprits melting into the crowd in
fancy dress.
A pathway links the museum to the
Parque das Ruínas
(Wed-Sun 10am-5pm),
an attractive public garden with great views
and containing the ruins of a mansion that
was once home to a Brazilian heiress.
Following her death the mansion fell into
disrepair but reopened as a cultural and
exhibition centre in the 1990s.
Glória and Catete
Heading into the Zona Sul from Centro,
it's worth visiting the eighteenth-century
Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Glória do
Outeiro
(Tues-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat & Sun
9am-noon), atop the Morro da Glória
(5min walk from Metrô Glória). Notable
for its innovative octagonal ground plan
and domed roof, the latter decked with
seventeenth-century blue-and-white
azulejos
and nineteenth-century marble
masonry, it's an architectural gem.
At Rua do Catete 153, adjacent to the
Catete
metrô station, the Palácio do
Catete houses the
Museu da República
(Tues-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat & Sun
2-6pm; R$6, free Wed & Sun). The
displays begin with the period of the
