palette. Remember that mixing the complement into a color will desaturate it. Many painters will slightly
neutralize their colors to get this effect.
Color saturation is also a function of perspective. A color will lose saturation the further it gets from the
eye. This is useful when trying to separate a figure from the background to create a sense of depth in the
image. Parts of a character that are receding from the viewer can be desaturated further to make them recede
from view. ( Figure 1-46 ) . This also means that areas closer to the viewer will have a higher color saturation
and therefore be a natural focal point for the eye, drawing the viewer's attention. By being aware of this
aspect of color saturation, you can hold the viewer's gaze in certain areas of the image based on where the
color is most saturated.
