Thiessen
Notes: The large fruits have excellent flavor and can ripen unevenly.
Grows about 15 feet tall with an 18-foot spread and suckers moder-
ately. Blooms earlier than most other varieties, making it more sus-
ceptible to frost damage. Somewhat resistant to powdery mildew, but
Cytospora canker can be a problem. Very popular for U-pick orchards.
Ornamental Varieties
Altaglow
Notes: The large, white fruits are sweet but bland. Grows about 20
feet tall with a 10-foot spread and forms a columnar shape. Produces
brilliant fall foliage. Best used in large landscapes. Requires cross-pol-
lination in order to set fruit.
Paleface
Notes: The large, white fruits are mild-favored. Grows about 6 feet tall
and produces few suckers. Suitable for smaller landscapes.
Regent
Notes: The small, dark blue fruits have a sweet, mild flavor. Grows
about 6 feet tall with a 6-foot spread and suckers moderately. May
